Why Blue-Collar America Chose Trump and the Republican Platform
Seven months ago a wealthy business man named Donald J. Trump was inaugurated to the highest position in the nation, the presidency. This, of course, had the Democratic Party thinking “How did this happen?”. Even Senator Bernie Sanders commented on the disarray of his party. The media is still in this disarray, but are now focused on trying to make the 2016 election look illegitimate. It wasn’t with Russia’s help that the Republicans won, but with the help of Blue Collar Democrats and Blue-Collar Workers. Today I’m going to delve into why Blue Collar America chose Trump by analyzing the Democratic Platform and the Republican Platform.
The Democratic Platform
Tax Plan
According to Diffen.com historically, The Democratic Party has a track record of raising taxes on the most wealthy in the nation. By taxing business owners at an unrealistic rate, they appeal to many in their base who receive benefits from the government. It’s the old take from the rich to give to the poor. When hard working Americans labor tirelessly to build successful businesses and futures for their families. As the official democratic platform says “- we believe the wealthiest Americans and largest corporations must pay their fair share of taxes…”.
Foreign Policy
One of the main focuses of the 2016 presidential platform of both parties was the United States relationship with Russia. This is a very tough and touchy subject between both parties. So let’s go back October of 2016, candidate Donald Trump says that he would like to try and build a good relationship with Russia. Candidate Hillary Clinton promises that she will sanction the Russian Government and condemn them. This had to have been worrying to many blue-collar workers. One candidate saying they would love to have peace, the other candidate saying that our worst enemy is hacking the election. Many people in the Democratic party even criticized Mrs. Clinton saying she would lead us to complete war with the Russians. Yet another red flag raised in the eye of the democratic party.
Social Policy
According to Democrats.org under the Social Policy section labeled “Protecting our values” it states, “ Our values of inclusion and tolerance inspire hope around the world and make us safer at home. The world will be more secure, stable, and peaceful when all people are able to reach their God-given potential and live in freedom and dignity.”. While this sounds perfect, it completely contradicts how many of the Democrats supporters or even candidates act. From the “Basket of Deplorables” as Hillary Clinton put it, or to calling her opponent a puppet of the Russian government, the insults came hard and fast. This hypocrisy is apparent to Blue-Collar Workers, according to forbes.com, “Blue collar workers appreciate honesty”. This is why the Democrats lost the Blue-Collar workers because the Democrats certainly weren’t honest.
The Republican Platform
Tax Plan
The Republican party historically supports lowering taxes. This trend continued this past election season. This was stated in their official platform, “To ensure that past abuses will not be repeated, we assert these fundamental principles. We oppose retroactive taxation. We condemn attempts by activist judges at any level of government to seize the power of the purse from the people’s elected representatives by ordering higher taxes.”, this is a huge plus for the average blue collar worker. After all, who doesn’t want less taxes? President also proposed a lowering on corporate tax to bring business back to America, this also encourages Blue Collar workers who own businesses.
Foreign Policy
President Trump on the campaign trail promised to end President Obama’s tradition of leading from behind. He also promised to defeat the Islamic state, and listen to his generals recommendations on the subject of national defense. President Trumps foreign policy is America focused. His dream is for America to lead the world.
Social Policy
Traditionally Republican run on traditional evangelical values like pro-life and pro-traditional marriage. The Official GOP Platform for 2016 states “We pledge to defend the religious beliefs and rights of conscience of all Americans and to safeguard religious institutions against government control.”. This keeps with the trend of traditional values. Although, President Trump never official took a stance on many social issues during the campaign he leaned more traditional.
Conclusion
Both parties in this past election had their flaws, but Blue-Collar Americans voted for President Trump. Most of the issue on the Republican ticket in 2016 were mostly populist and physically conservative. The Democratic Party this last season won with blue-collar workers on pretty much nothing, but the Republican Party won on Foreign, Social, and Tax polices. But lets not forget that many people voted for President Trump to avoid a President Clinton. I feel that is why Blue-Collar Americans voted for the Republicans in 2016.
